She is the wife of Duncan McAdoo and mother of three sweet girls, Kendal (age 15), Kennedie (age 11) and Kaitlyn (age 11). Growing up as a child, Beverly always had great vision. She never wore contacts or even needed glasses. In her late twenties and early thirties, she started to notice a change in her vision. She went to the eye doctor in 2008 and was given some devastating news. She was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease. Stargardt’s Disease is a form of an inherited juvenile macular degeneration. This disease causes death of the photoreceptor cells in the central portion of the retina called the macula and eventually leads to blindness. The macula is responsible for sharp central vision—for tasks like reading, watching television, and looking at faces. Stargardt’s affects both eyes and is the result of a gene called ABCA4 and is usually a recessive trait. When both parents carry the ABCA4 mutation, there is a 25 percent chance their children will have Stargardt’s Disease. Stargardt’s Disease, like other forms of macular degeneration, does not have a cure yet. Since 2008, Beverly’s vision has rapidly declined. She can no longer drive and has a very hard time seeing or reading. Beverly is currently being seen and evaluated by the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in Dallas, Texas. The Retina Foundation of the Southwest is dedicated to preventing vision loss and restoring sight through innovative research and treatment. The foundation has yet to find a cure for Stargardt’s Disease. WE WANT TO FIND A CURE! Let’s cure blindness together!
